First Chance Discount

First-time drivers should have access to affordable coverage, so long as they remain accident-free and demonstrate safe driving habits. Young drivers in particular deserve the opportunity to drive with affordable insurance when they need a vehicle to have a job.

This discount has been available since January 2005.

The First Chance discount is governed by the following rules:

  • All new drivers are eligible to receive this premium discount.

  • The discount may be subsidized through a risk-sharing pool by all policy-holders.

  • The discount is available to new drivers (including those who already have insurance), parents with new drivers covered on their policy, and other individuals who cover a new driver under their contract of insurance.

  • Drivers who have successfully completed an approved driver training program will receive credit for the equivalent of six years' driving experience.

  • Drivers who do not take an approved driver training program will receive credit for the equivalent of three years' driving experience.

The discount gives new drivers and their parents, on average, a 30 per cent reduction on the cost of coverage associated with new drivers.

This benefit is available to both new drivers with their own policy and to parents with children listed as occasional drivers.

One at-fault accident or conviction for a driving or other relevant offence will result in ineligibility for or elimination of this discount. Such drivers will lose their driving experience credit and will then be assessed according to their actual experience.
